Key priorities for Sweden’s support through bilateral funds are infrastructure development, climate change and the environment, inclusion, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), and gender. Regionally, its bilateral funding focuses on the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Sweden is also an important contributor to several multi-donor funds: the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P), the Sustainable Infrastructure Fund (SIF), the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP), the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) Multi-Donor Account, the Ukraine Stabilisation and Sustainable Growth Multi-Donor Account, the Small Business Impact Fund (SBIF), and the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP).

The value of joint Sweden-EBRD investment stood at €5.81 billion as of February 2023. EBRD finance accounted for €3.56 billion, and Sweden investment accounted for €2.25 billion.

The joint investment has been strong in Poland, followed by regional projects, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Broken down by industry, the joint investment has been the strongest in the following sectors: industry, commerce and agribusiness, sustainable infrastructure, and financial institutions.

Swedish banks are also involved in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP), through which the EBRD guarantees the payment of trade finance instruments that are issued by banks in countries of operations to foreign confirming banks. Since inception, the TFP has supported 213 export and import transactions for Swedish companies for a total € 164.60 million, for transactions which were initiated by banks in the EBRD countries of operation and confirmed by banks in both Sweden and abroad. Seven Swedish banks and branches of banks have joined the programme as Confirming Banks (all figures as of December 2023).

From 2018 to 2022, entities from Sweden won 63 consultancy contracts worth €1,527,749.00.

Success story: how support from Sweden is enabling the city of Baranovichi in Belarus to go ‘green’ by installing the country’s first wastewater treatment plant which turns organic waste into renewable energy.
