Portugal-EBRD investments

Since 1992, Portugal has contributed about €2.4 million in grants for technical cooperation projects in various countries of operations. Priority sectors include energy, municipal and environmental infrastructure and small business.

Portugal is an important source of foreign direct investment in the EBRD’s countries of operations. The value of joint Portugal-EBRD investment stood at €2.07 billion as of December 2023. EBRD finance accounted for €1.44 billion and Portuguese investment accounted for €636.0 million.

The joint investment has been strong in Poland, followed by Romania, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan. Broken down by industry, has been in financial institutions, sustainable infrastructure, industry, commerce and agribusiness.

Portuguese banks are also involved in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP), through which the EBRD guarantees the payment of trade finance instruments issued by banks in countries of operations to foreign confirming banks. Since inception, the TFP has supported 64 export and import transactions for Portuguese companies for a total € 28.22 million, for transactions which were initiated by banks in the EBRD countries of operation and confirmed by banks in both Portugal and abroad. Twelve Portuguese banks and branches of banks have joined the programme as Confirming Banks (all figures as of December 2023).

From 2018 to 2022, entities from Portugal won 76 consultancy contracts worth €1,925,762.00.
