Belgium-EBRD investments
Since 1994, the governments of Belgium, Flanders and Wallonia have contributed about €24 million through technical cooperation (TC) funds, mainly for projects in manufacturing and transport and the EBRD’s Multilateral Carbon Credit Fund, an EBRD-EIB instrument dedicated to countries from central Europe to Central Asia.
Belgium is an important source of foreign direct investment in the EBRD’s countries of operations.
The value of joint investments stood at €12.38 billion as of end December 2023. EBRD finance accounted for €8.72billion of this total and Belgian investment accounted for €3.66 billion.
The joint investment has been strong regionally and in Egypt, Romania, Türkiye and Poland. Broken down by industry, the joint investment has been the strongest in the following sectors: Financial Institutions, Sustainable Infrastructure and in Industry, Commerce & Agribusiness. Belgian banks are also involved in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP), through which the EBRD guarantees the payment of trade finance instruments issued by banks in countries where we invest to foreign confirming banks. Since inception, the TFP has supported 584 export and import transactions for Belgian companies for a total € 463.8 million, for transactions which were initiated by banks in the EBRD countries of operation and confirmed by banks in both Belgium and abroad. Eleven Belgian banks and branches of banks have joined the programme as Confirming Banks (all figures as of December 2023).
Belgium is also a contributor to the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP) Nuclear Window.
From 2018 to 2022, entities from Belgium won 117 procurement and consultancy contracts worth €24.9 million.
